Newport’s Five-Run Third Inning and a Pair of Homers Ends Series |
||||||||||
MANCHESTER – Playing the game was probably just a formality. The heavily favored Gulls scored five times in the third inning and coasted to a 9-3 victory over the Silkworms Monday night at Northwest Park. “That’s been our season all year,” Al Leyva said after his fist year as the Silkworm manager came to a merciful end. “We cruise along and then all of a sudden a key error that goes into another error. We made two errors that cost us two runs. It’s unfortunate, but hopefully they will learn from it. In this game, you can’t give up four or five outs an inning.”...more ... |

Silkworms and Twisters Rained Out by Paul Ofria/Silkworm Sports Information Dept MANCHESTER – The Silkworms’ home game Sunday night against Torrington was rained out and will be played on Friday, August 1st, if necessary. The Silkworms hold a two game lead over the Twisters for the fourth and final playoff spot in the NECBL South Division. Sunday’s game was a make-up from a July 1st rainout between the teams at Northwest Park. Overnight rain and heavy downpours late Sunday afternoon left the field unplayable. The won-loss records of the bottom four teams in the NECBL South Division look like Delta House report cards, but two of the teams will qualify for post-season play. North Adams is the valedictorian of the group with a tenuous hold on third place, checking in at 16-21. Manchester (15-22), with five games remaining on its regular season schedule, can qualify for the post season with any combination of Manchester wins and Torrington losses adding up to five. Torrington (12-23) has seven games left, including double-headers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Manchester travels to Newport on Monday before hosting last place Danbury (11-23) for two seven-inning games on Tuesday at Northwest beginning at 4:30 pm. "We were talking that if we played (Sunday) and Manchester won, it would be hard for Torrington to catch us," Manchester GM Ed Slegeski said. Manchester was hoping to tie its season high of two straight wins after shutting out Danbury Saturday night. Brian Pendergast (Unionville, CT/Manhattan College) pitched a three-hit, complete game in a 4-0 victory over Danbury at Northwest Park. Sunday's Silkworm vs. Torrington game will be made up only if it has bearing on the standings. Another possible scenario would have Manchester traveling to Newport on Friday instead if Monday's game became a victim of the weather as well. The 22-16 Gulls are battling with Pittsfield (22-12) for first place in the division. The NECBL would like to get the playoffs started as scheduled on August 1st if possible. "It's about as clear as mud, literally " Slegeski said of the NECBL's final regular season week and pending playoffs. Wednesday is an open day for the Silkies - for now - before traveling to Vermont on Thursday to play a makeup game against the 18-17 Mountaineers. The 2006 and 2007 NECBL Champion Mountaineers are currently in fourth place and battling for their playoff lives in the North. |

.By Don Leypoldt, Silkworms Sports Information Dept Which raises the hypothetical question: What would Copeland, now a starting outfielder for the San Francisco Giants’ double-A Connecticut Defenders affiliate, have done at Manchester if he had known how to play baseball? Despite his collegiate success- he won the 2005 Big East batting title by hitting .384 in his junior year- the modest yet outgoing Copeland would say he was as raw as a winter day in his hometown of Bradford. Bradford is notoriously known as “The icebox of Pennsylvania.” “I didn’t understand the way baseball was played back then. I’d go up there hacking and if I hit it, I’d run and if I didn’t, I’d go back to the dugout. I didn’t get the concepts of situational hitting, looking for pitches to hit or what you are supposed to do when you are ahead of the count or a two strike approach or any of that stuff,” explains Copeland. “I’ve learned that over the years.” For example, as a Silkworm Copeland struck out 37 times while walking just nine. Four years later, playing for high-A San Jose, the lefty walked almost as much as he struck out. Baseball America ranked the Pitt Panther as a top 30 prospect in the San Francisco farm and called him “perhaps the Giants’ most patient minor league hitter.” Copeland recalls, “I have a good friend who is a scout and when he looked at my numbers, he said ‘You’ve got to limit the strikeouts and even out the walks and the strikeouts. I didn’t even know that those were two comparable stats. I’ve worked on that ever since.” The Giants forfeited their first three picks of the 2005 amateur draft due to free agent signings. When they selected Copeland in the fourth round that June, he became San Francisco’s first pick. Copeland didn’t disappoint: at all four levels (rookie, short season, low-A and high-A), he never failed to hit below .280 nor have an on base percentage below .364. His 12 triples and 30 steals in 135 games at low-A Augusta in 2006 showed the Giants’ brass the potency of his speed and line drive stroke. 2008 has been a mixed bag for Copeland. He struggled in April but was honored as the Eastern League Player of the Week on May 5th. Since May 1st, Copeland was hitting .252 and slugging .424 as of press time. He had also stolen 15 bases in just 18 attempts. Copeland has fielded the inevitable ups and downs of double-A baseball adroitly. “The only thing that I can say is that when I’m locked in like that is when I swing the bat, the ball hits my bat. That’s what it feels like,” says Copeland. “I don’t think I’m doing anything differently, or the pitching is worse or anything like that. I don’t sit back and say ‘I can do this every day. That was easy.’ Because that is not how this game works. “Consequently, when I’m struggling, I think ‘I’m not going to hit .223 all year because I’m a better hitter than that.’ I’m taking positives out of every game. That’s all you can do.” The learning process never stops for elite baseball players. Copeland continues, “I’ve learned that good baseball players are made just as much in the off-season as they are in the season. It’s important to stay in shape. Even if you aren’t playing, you still have a job. “You’ve got to work. Anybody can do anything if you put the work in and if you believe in it. Guys will tell you, scouts will tell you, coaches will tell you, ‘You’re not fast enough. You don’t do this at the plate, you don’t do this in the outfield.’ That’s good feedback. I take that feedback and that is what I work on.” Copeland is also quick to add, “This is what I really want to do. Playing minor league ball isn’t that glamorous but it is a ton of fun. It is what they’re doing in Manchester now, but I’m getting paid for it and getting to check out towns all across the country. I’ve played in every part of the country and I’ve had a blast doing it. If you just enjoy baseball, it will reward you.” He continues, “You’ve got to start somewhere and Manchester was a real good time. That was my first introduction to this kind of pro life style. Having the routine of playing every night. Getting to the field at 2:30 or 3 p.m. You’re not playing every single night, but it is more conducive to the pro game than the three or four game weekend college series.” For all farmhands- especially for those in San Francisco’s affiliates- making the Majors is a Giant process. As Copeland continues his progression from Norwich, Connecticut to his ideal destination 3,000 miles away at McCovey Cove, he can fondly recall how his time in Manchester- a town with a great manufacturing tradition- helped to make him a better ballplayer. For more information on Copeland or any of the other Silkworm alumni, please contact Don Leypoldt in sports information or G.M. Ed Slegeski (SilkwormsGM@aol.com). The Manchester Silkworms are a proud member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, an MLB sanctioned wooden bat league. 41 Silkworm alumni have been selected in Major League Baseball’s amateur draft.
